Community Meeting about Motiti Protection Areas

** Update: Sadly it has not been possible to proceed with the meeting we had planned this Wednesday due to audience limits imposed under Covid Level 2. We will post here when it is possible to set up a new date but in the meantime Todd will be presenting the petition to Parliament next week. We urge you to sign the official Parliamentary petition here.

Todd Muller, MP for Bay of Plenty, is hosting a community discussion about the planned exclusion zone around three reef systems near Motiti Island. After this meeting Todd will be presenting a petition to Parliament requesting that greater consultation be given around the closure of reefs and for affected coastal fishers to have their views heard.

Todd will be accompanied by Tim van de Molen, Opposition Spokesperson for Oceans and Fisheries. Representatives from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council will also be available to provide information about their new role in management of coastal fisheries.

In 2020 Todd wrote to the Minister of Conservation requesting that she delay proceeding with the fishing ban until recreational fishers could be consulted about its impacts. You can read Todd's letter here and the Minister's reply here in which she advises the Bay of Plenty Regional Coastal Environment Plan will be getting her approval so Todd's petition will still be presented to Parliament.

Sign the official Parliamentary Petition here.
