The 2014 New Zealand Scholarship Awards have just been presented and local MP Todd Muller was excited to be there as top students were recognised and celebrated for their achievements.

“I’m thrilled to see local student Ms Briar Patel from Aquinas College receive the Top Subject Award in Technology,” Todd Muller said.

Ms Patel gained the top prize out of almost 8,000 students who participated in New Zealand Scholarship exams. She will receive a scholarship over the next three years to continue studying at a higher level.

Ms Patel designed and built a mock pedestrian crossing to teach students how to use light-controlled crossings, and made a game of it.

Two students at each end push a button that looks just like a regular pedestrian-crossing button. When the light turns green, the students stamp on a button inside a tray. The tray fills with water and the student whose tray fills last, the “loser”, is squirted with water.

Ms Patel developed the activity for Kaka Street Special School students and constructed it all, including the electronic circuits, the 3D printed valves and the pedestrian light.

“I really enjoy looking at a problem and finding creative ways to solve it”, Ms Patel said.

“Ms Patel has shown exceptional talent in finding a need in the community and developing a product to meet that need,” Todd Muller said.

“I congratulate Ms Patel on her success and I am confident that she will go a long way with these skills.

“I believe education is the best base for success in the working world and I’m glad to be here among so many students who already recognise the value of their education and who are working hard for it.

“National believes ensuring every child gets a good education is one of the most important things we can do to raise living standards, and build a more competitive and productive economy,” Todd Muller said.
