Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller joined Transport Minister Hon Simon Bridges for the sod turning at the Maungatapu Roundabout this afternoon.

“The $45 million underpass will reduce congestion on both the Hairini and Maungatapu Roundabouts and is designed to improve safety on our roads,” Mr Muller says.

The underpass project will separate State Highway 29 traffic from local traffic and is set to be completed over the next three years.

“I have been travelling to and from Welcome Bay since I was a boy, this has been talked about for years, particularly since SH29 highway was built in the 1980s, so it’s great to finally see it happen.

“The project will also benefit cyclists and pedestrians with features including new paths and a bridge over the SH29A.

“The Government has invested significantly in road infrastructure nearby, notably Tauranga’s central corridor and the Tauranga Eastern Link.

“This underpass project will complement these roads and support a safer, more efficient Bay of Plenty network,” Mr Muller says.

The Maungatapu Underpass runs from the Hairini Bridge on State Highway 2A to the Welcome Bay Road intersection, underneath State Highway 29.
