Proposed changes to child protection and care are impressive says MP

Local MP Todd Muller has welcomed the announcement today that Child and Youth and Family will be completely transformed.

“I am impressed how comprehensive these proposed changes are,” said Todd Muller.

“The life outcomes for children in state care have been abysmal and we simply have to change our approach.

“Children that have been through CYF are more likely to be on a benefit, have low educational achievement, and have contact with the Youth Justice and Corrections systems. We can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting to get better results,” says Todd.

The system will be completely overhauled to improve the long-term life outcomes for New Zealand’s most vulnerable population as a result of a recent review. An expert panel has shown that the current system is not working for those children and young people who, through no fault of their own, come into care.

“What makes this announcement so important is that is that it’s not about just putting more money into an organisation that simply hasn’t been delivering. We must ensure that children are at the centre of our investment, we must bring Government and Non-Governmental agencies to the table for solutions and we must have clear accountabilities. Too many children have been let down for too long, we mean to change it and change it we will.

A bold set of recommendations have been made and today we have announced a new operating model scheduled to be in place by the end of March next year. There is no quick fix and this is a long term transformation programme over the next 5 years.
