Todd Muller, MP for Bay of Plenty has welcomed the Government’s announcement to improve SH29.

“This is fantastic news for the Bay. Investment into upgrading the safety of State Highway 29 from Tauriko to the top of the Kaimai’s will significantly reduce deaths and serious injuries,” says Mr Muller.

“We know that eight of 10 fatal and serious injury crashes on state highways occur on rural roads and 85 to 90 per cent of those are head on or where the driver runs off the road.

“I have been working alongside local Western Bay of Plenty District Council councillor Margaret Murray-Benge to advocate for investment on this road and I acknowledge local MP and Minister of Transport Simon Bridges leadership and commitment to make this happen.

“We have had announced significant investment in our local roads with the confirmation of the Tauranga Northern Link last month, so this safety investment is further commitment to ensuring we have infrastructure this region needed.”

The safety upgrades will include a combination of side barriers, rumble strips, wide centre line treatments and median barriers. In some areas corners will be softened to improve visibility and road marking and signage highlighting the road environment will be upgraded.

“Project investigation on the specific safety solutions for SH29 is due to start later this year and I will work with Cr Murray-Benge to ensure our local Kaimai community are consulted on the options.”
