Local MP encourages applications for R&D Experience Grants
Todd Muller MP for Bay of Plenty encourages Bay students to apply for the R&D Experience Grants that were announced today for 116 businesses to employ students over the 2016/17 summer break.
The Student Experience Grants, administered by Callaghan Innovation, provide New Zealand students in their final year studying science, technology, business, engineering or design the opportunity to gain valuable work experience.
“There are 245 grants available which aim to develop the technical skills of students in a professional, commercial R&D environment, while also providing businesses with expertise to further their work,” Mr Muller says.
“These grants are a fantastic way to develop and grow our graduates and connect them with future opportunities in the Bay.”
Callaghan Innovation received its largest number of applications from companies in the 2016 application round since the programme’s inception – 364.
“I encourage businesses and students to take advantage of this opportunity. It will help our Bay students gain valuable experience and skills from some of our fantastic, innovative businesses and it will give our local businesses a chance to bring in some of the best students in the country and take advantage of new talent.”
“Research and Development is vital in this day and age where technological advances provide huge opportunities for businesses to get ahead of the game. Ensuring that Bay businesses and their future employees are taking charge to gain skills in this area is important.”
“Internships play a big role in bridging the gap between university and full time work so the way that Callaghan Innovation is leading the charge to support the provision of this initiative is great to see.”
There are seven businesses in the Bay of Plenty region offering a total of 10 internships:
Oasis Engineering (2003) Ltd
Interpine Group Ltd
PlusGroup Horticulture Limited
Trimax Mowing Systems NZ Limited
Bluelab Corporation Limited
Radford Software Limited
Comvita New Zealand Ltd
“In the previous year over a third of businesses summer interns went on to gain employment at their sponsoring company which illustrates the success of the programme.
The programme is available to businesses of all sizes that have a focus on research and development and to all science, technology, engineering, design or business undergraduate students studying at NZQA levels 7 to 8 or equivalent at a New Zealand tertiary institute.
The R&D Experience grant provides funding of $18 an hour for up to 400 hours of work upon proof of the company’s payment to the student (to a maximum of $7,200 excl. GST).
